Code Hero 0.063 Alpha First Impressions

Code Hero is a game about making games. It uses a game to teach you how to program and also the ins and outs of the Unity3D game engine.

So is it any good? Welllll.. I guess that’s debatable. I’ll go ahead and say that it has the potential to be good but it isn’t quite there yet. Granted this is an Alpha version but so far, Primer Labs have given fans a lot to complain about. This was supposed to be a totally reworked version of the Beta that was released earlier in the year but ended up looking nearly the same.

Nothing felt complete, not even the ‘Virtual Tour’ you take at the beginning of the game. Primer Labs has postponed this release over and over again to crunch some bugs, but come on!! There are spelling errors all over the place, poorly written and sometimes just flat out wrong code written in the examples.

It isn’t all bad though, the implementation of Unity3D from within the game is looking really good so far but still has a long way to go. For example there is one portion of the tutorial where you have to enter a string for a story trigger, but if you make it more than a few words long, it stretches the menu so that the save button is off the screen, unclickable, and pressing enter doesn’t work. These are obvious problems that will surely be fixed within the next build (at least, let’s hope so!).

While I know that their project isn’t an easy one, if they really want to satisfy their fans they should post some news every once in a while, let us know whats going on. Nearly 6 months since they finished their Kickstarter campaign and we’ve got a barely playable, not even finishable tutorial!

Don’t get me wrong, this game has loads of potential, by the time it’s finished I guarantee it will kick ass. Keep in mind, this is a review of the my first impressions only, there is still plenty of time for it to change. I’ll post another review when the next build is available. It would be great to see some sections that focus on scripting languages like Python or Perl, even HTML! I’d really love to see a section on *nix also, as its a great, free environment for the programmer. Until next time, my fingers are crossed!

Interactive Python Tutorials

This is just awesome. If you are new to programming or just want a breath of fresh air, I recommend learning Python. Now it’s easier than ever with sites like this, from beginner to advanced interactive tutorials, right inside your web browser!

My Results— The Myers Briggs Personality Type Test

So I took the test here and found out that I’m an ENFP. Pretty cool, the same apparently as Aldous Huxley, Steven Spielburg, and Mark Twain! I hope that I can one day be at least one quarter of the man that they are/were!!

It would be cool to find out about my readers as well, let me know about yourselves!

Nethack!

Don’t let the graphics, or lack thereof detur you from one of the greatest, most challenging games ever created. It may take you years to beat, and even then you may not yet have seen everything it has to offer. Some of its features include permadeath, random levels, creatures, item locations, etc..

Give it try— if you dare!!

What is Unity3D?

Some of you may have heard of Unity3D from here at RETRO WASTELAND or elsewhere. For those who haven’t, basically it’s an awesome 3d engine that’s available FREE (so long as you are making less than 100,000 in sales, and you aren’t developing for mobile devices as the free version only applies to pc and mac titles). It makes building a 3D game 10 times easier for sure, but still lets you have most of the flexibility of building a game from the ground up since it you can script in C#, Javascript or Boo.
For those of you who enjoyed the Fallout series, there is a similar title which is being developed using Unity3D called Wasteland 2 which is the sequal to the acclaimed pc title of 1988 Wasteland. Another upside of using unity is the unity web player, which allows for playing gorgeous 3d games right inside your web browser, to see an example of this check out Dead Frontier if you haven’t already, a free zombie MMO.
